The Writers Assist Pilot Program

Writers Assist is a new initiative of the Writers Benevolent Fund. It is a program extending the Fund’s ongoing commitment – provided since 1980 – to deliver support for writers undergoing hardship.

Our new program offers payments between $500 to $5,000 to help writers facing illness, accident, old age and/or disability along with some other necessary, one-off expenses that may be beyond their means.

Support under the pilot program will be advertised biannually and applications will be assessed by the Trustees of the Writers Benevolent Fund. Applicants will be notified of the outcome approximately one month after the application closing date.

The Writers Assist Pilot Program will commence during the 2020 year.

At the end of the pilot period, the program will be evaluated to determine whether it is an appropriate and viable way of supporting writers experiencing hardship.

As previously, the Writers Benevolent Fund will also respond to requests for immediate, emergency assistance. Writers may contact us at any time about such cases by email at writersbenevolentfund@gmail.com or by writing to the Administrator.

What can I use the financial assistance for?
You can use the payments for expenses that are deemed necessary to support you if you are experiencing financial difficulty. You will be asked to demonstrate need.

What type of assistance is there?
As a guide, the Trustees may consider support for medical expenses, wheelchairs, mobility devices, funeral costs, short term rent assistance, due or overdue gas/electricity or other utility bills, and urgent house repairs.

How much can I apply for?
You may apply for assistance for any amount from $500 to $5,000.

What is not covered?
Ongoing expenses such as travel, professional development, writing fees or salary, research-related expenses, editorial and publication costs are not covered by the program.

Will I get the full amount I ask for?
The Trustees reserve the right to provide you with an amount that may be less than the total amount for which you have applied.

Will the information I provide remain confidential?
Yes. Your information will not be shared with anyone other than the Trustees and the Administrator without your written approval.

How long will it be before I find out the result of my Application?
All applicants will be notified approximately one month after the Application closing date.
